COLD, WET SUMMER

Conditions in England Writing from London. Miss Christina Wallace, Kelburn, who has been on the other side of the world for the last six months, speaks in rather dolorous terms of the consistently wet and cold summer which has been experienced in England this year. Only on two or three occasions could women think of wearing the usual light and airy summer clothing that is designed for a normally fine summer, and trade had been affected on that account. What seemed to interest Miss Wallace more than anything was ‘’sixteen lovely days spent in Germany,” during which she, her father and sister visited Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Gamisch and even penetrated to Ober-Ammergau, though there was no passion play to see. and there again it was very cold. The German people were extremely kind and courteous to them everywhere and Miss Wallace formed the impression that though the people were kept well in line under the Hitler regime they were quite happy, outwardly, at all events.

Mr. A. H. Wallace and his two daughttrs are returning to Australia by the Otranto, which is due at Sydney on December 7, and after a week there they will sail for Wellington by the Wanganella.
