A man of Madrid and its environs, specially prepared to illustrate the struggle taking place between the rebels and Government forces for possession. The rebels are attacking from the south-west parallel with the road from Toledo as indicated by the dotted arrows. Their advance has been held up by the Government forces on the line of the Manzanares River, the bridges over which have been destroyed. The rebels made strong efforts to gain control of the western parks, but have so far been unsuccessful. The Madrid model prison, in which many supporters of the rebels were held, lies on the border of the parks, but the prisoners have been removed out of the battle area For the bombardment of the city the rebels have been making use of the high ground to the southwest which reaches its peak at Carabanchel Alto, 2.600 feet above sea level. There are but few buildings on the western side of the Manzanares, the city proper lying to the east.
