WANGANUI A. & P. SHOW

Gratifying Entries

N.Z. CHILLED BEEF CHAMPIONSHIP

Good Competition in All Classes

Dominion Special Service.

Wanganui, November 11.

The sixty-second annual show of the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Society opened at Wanganui this morning in dull and threatening weather, with occasional showers. Grounds were heavy underfoot, but on the whole conditions were considered very satisfactory. With the exception of Jersey classes, entries ■this year are in excess of last year’s. Particularly gratifying to the officials is the fact that the entries in the 1936 New Zealand chilled beef championship total 60, and these represent the widest choice of breeds from all agricultural districts in the North Island. Had there been ampler accommodation for this class, entries would have been considerably larger. Entries in the horse events are representative of the Wanganui, Wairarapa, Palmerston North, Hawke’s Bay and New Plymouth districts, and presented to the judges the cream of each province. An animal which attracted a good deal of attention was a horse caught by Mr. A. Read, of Makirikiri, on the Karioi Plains, which had rope growing into its neck. As usual, the jumping events were watched with interest, and. this, brought out some excellent competition. In the sheep sections, Romney Marsh and 'Southdown breeds were very .strong, but there was a slight falling off in Lincoln and Corriedale classes. Competition was keen in the Meat Board’s export class, and some ideal beasts were judged. Particular attention wag. paid to constitution, types of wool unsuitable for hill country, quality of flesh and lamb-rearing ability in the Romney flock hogget classes. This class has been consistently introduced by the society to educate .the public as to what ig the most profitable sheep to be grown on the average hill country in the Wellington province, and without doubt this object was achieved to-day. Trade exhibits were again strong, and •there were the usual tHde-shows offeringtheir varied entertaiurneDt to the public. CHAMPIONSHIPS The championship list was as follows :— CATTLE. Stud Red Polls. Wyley and Sons, and by winning the event twice in succession they are entitled to the 25-guinea silver challenge cup. Commenting on the class, the judge. Mr. S. S. Timbs, late of Smithfield, said to “The Dominion” that the clasg of 63 bullocks was, he felt sure, about the largest and finest quality show of beef ever exhibited in the Dominion. “I have judged this exhibition on two previous occasions,” he said. “The progress in the quality desired, the age and size, is truly remarkable. To-day’s exhibits, if groomed, handled and led, would create a sensation in any fat stock show in Great Britain. As an exhibit of grazing commercial cattle they are a great credit to all concerned. I hope the day will not be too far distant when a little trouble will be taken to break in, lead and handle such wonderful samples.” By using ultra-violet rays, Australian detectives hope to be able to obtain fingerprints from cloth and other soft surfaces.
