CLOSING OF FOXTON GASWORKS

“Side-stepping the Issue”

AGENCY ACCEPTED FOR SUPPLY IN BOTTLES

Dominion Special Service.

Foxton, November 11.

The Foxton Borough Council decided on Monday evening to accept an agency for a natural gas retailed in bottles in order to enable it to close its municipal gasworks. The mayor, Mr. M. E. Perreau. said that there was doubt in the minds of some people, following newspaper correspondence, as to whether the council would be able to close its works, as the Act required that it should continue to supply. He did not think the doubt was a very grave one, but in any case the acceptance of the agency referred ro would enable the council to side-step the issue. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Dr. E. M. Wyllie, the mayor referring to the loss the town and district Jiad suffered by his death. A suggestion from the Levin Borough Council that a conference be held in Levin on November 24 to discuss the matter of a subsidy toward the cost of health inspection in the district, was agreed to, the mayor and clerk being appointed delegates. The Palmerston North City Council forwarded a resolution deprecating the use of foreign flags and bunting on . the occasion of the coronation celebrations next year. This was endorsed, the clerk being’instructed to ascertain the requirements of the council and to report to the next meeting. Gate takings for Foxton for the Rugby season just closed amounted to £7B/9/-. A cheque for £7/17/-, the council’s percentage, was forwarded by the Horowhenua Rugby Union. The Foxton Chamber of Commerce wrote expressing appreciation of the council’s action in erecting a cycle stand in Main Street. A letter from the Foxton Tennis Club asked if the‘council intended to keep the grass cut on the terrace at the courts. It was decided to advise the club that th,s work was its own responsibility.
