Gymnastics and Concert

Steady progress has been made by the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. in encouraging physical fitness, and the first public gymnastic display and concert was presented in the Labour Hall, Petone, on Wednesday night. The gymnastic display consisted oi “frolics” by the younger boys’ class, exercises and pyramids by the primary schoolboys’ class, vaulting horse by the secondary and older boys’ class, free exercises by the senior men, tumbling trio by the secondary school and older boys’ class, aud dumbbell exercises, wand drill, vaulting horse and parallel bar exercises by the senior men. The association also conducts girls’ classes aud an exhibition of calisthenics was given by the junior girls. Interspersed with the display items were songs by Miss L. Wright, instrumental items by the General Motors Band, a humorous sketch, “Lizah” and ’’Harry,” songs by Mr. W. Miller, violin solo by Miss Arrowsmith, a Scottish item by “Mr. McTavish.” The leader of the General Motors Band gave a piano-ac-cord ion solo.

Mr. H. W. Kereley, president-of the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A., thanked the performers, especially those from outside the ranks, of the Y.M.C.A. He made special mention of the services of Miss E. M. Bartley, the pianist for the physical items. Mr. Kersley commended to parents the value of the Y.M.C.A. activities and mentioned that the association had commenced a girls’ physical class and was prepared to arrange for business men's classes.

Mr. A. C. Edwards, general secretary, thanked the audience for the patronage afforded and regretted that owing to the small stage a full programme could not be staged.
