N.Z. GOLF TITLE

T. S. Galloway Leads In Open Championship

SECOND DAY’S PLAY

Hornabrook’s 71 is Best Round

A. J. SHAW DROPS BACK £

(By Telegraph. —From “Niblick.”)

New Plymouth, October 23.

The professional T. S. Galloway today assumed the lead in the New Zealand open golf championship with an aggregate of 144, repeating his yesterday’s performance with another fine round of 72. H. D. Brinsden, the Titirangi amateur, also recorded 72, which gave him second place, equal with A. E. Guy, the New Zealand Golf Association’s coach, who followed his 72 on Thursday witii a 75 to-day, making his aggregate 147. A. J. Shaw, who led with 70 on the first round, had to be content witii a 78 to-day, and A. Murray, holder of the open title, had to struggle hard to record 79.

Ngamotu continues to prove a searching course and is penalising players who do not place their shots accurately. Heavy tropical rain last night nnd this morning made prospects dismal for today, but about 10 o’clock the sun dispersed the clouds and the remainder of the dav turned out beautifully fine. A light north-easterly wind soon dried the course thoroughly, and the greens, if anything, were faster than they were on Thursday. T. S. Galloway followed up his 72 on Thursday with even fours again to-day. Starting off with five fours in a row. lie then notched a three. His only mistake was at the eighth hole, where he pulled his iron second and was short with his chip, taking six for this 39-)-yard hole, which lias an elevated green and caused dire trouble to several scratch players to-day. Taking four at the ninth. Galloway was out in 38. one over bogey.

He then-jumped into his best form and made a brilliant run home in 34. playing beautiful golf. He ended up "’hli eagle threes at the seventeenth (400 yards) and the eighteenth (435 yards). At the home hole he followed up a splendid drive with a spanking No. 2 iron second which landed his ball two inches from the cup. His card read : —

Out: 444443564—3 S In : 543534433—31

Brinsden in Form.

H. D. Brinsden, whom several good judges pick to win rhe amateur title, followed up his 75 on Thursday with a nice 72 to-day. He played round witii J D. Mclntosh, the Wellington unattached professional, and the pair turned on golf of a high quality on the out journey. McIntosh taking 33 and Brinsden 34. Their figures were: — Mclntosh, 334453443—33. Brinsden, 344353543 —34. Brinsden was not so steady on the Home run, which cost him 38. but his 72 placed him in second position equal with A. E. Guy. Guy again played steadily to record 75, which made his aggregate the same as Brinsden’s. J. I’. Hornabrook (Manawatu). amateur champion of the Dominion, came right on to his best form today and returned a brilliant 71. the best round of the day. He played a round with A. Murray, open champion of the Dominion, and in this exhibition the amateur proved superior to the tune of 8 strokes. Hornabrook started off with five t’s and had six 4’s, a 5 and a 3 on his card for an out journey of 35. His 5 at the eighth was due to pushing his tee shot out of bounds. He had a lapse at the thirteenth, where his second shot ran through the green and he failed to chip up the bank at the first attempt, the hole eosting him 5. He made amends- for this with a birdie 2 nt “Moses’’ (113 yards) and finished up with four 4's to run home in 30. His card read : Out: 444443453—35 In: 553524-144—36 71 As on Thursday, Murray failed to reproduce the inspired form which won him all the honours at Shirley last year. He had a tragedy at the eighth, where he put three shots out of bounds off the tee. and finished up by driving with an iron. It was only by sinking a long putt that he managed to get down in 7. He was all at sea on the greens, and could, do nothing right, taking 39 for the out journey, and 40 for the second nine holes. Ngamotu Beats Shaw. A. J. Shaw, whom most people fancy for the open title this week, and who did a glorious 70 on Thursday, was bested by Ngamotu to-day. Starting off in confident style with three fours, he then failed to be up with his seconds, and also lost his putting touch. He duffed his drive badly off the eighth tee, and, though on rhe green in three, took three putts. He also failed to reach the green off the tee at the short ninth, and took 40 for the out journey. He failed to get up the bank with his third at the tenth, and took six for the hole. Indifferent play on the home journey was redeemed by birdies at the seventeenth and eighteenth, and he made the run home in 38, which gave him 78 for the round. This was a sad crash from his brilliant opening round. , , , Max Moore (Miramar), who played round with Shaw, went out in 40 and returned in 42. Among the players who were more at home on Ngamotu to-day were J. Weir, the New Plymouth professional, who did a steady 73. Out in 39, he did a brilliant run home of 34. D. C. Collins, the Wairarapa amateur, showed something like his true form with 74. A. G. Sime (Otago) followed up his 75 on Thursday with a steady round of 73. He likes the New Plymouth course and is quite at home upon it. N. FI. W. Amon, the Rangitikei amateur .also played well to record 73.

J. L. Black (Hutt), who did a 71 on Thursday, could only manage 77 to-day. and L. Cathro (Seafield), who recorded 73 in the first round, lost touch on the greens to-day and took 78. Bryan Silk (Hutt) went round in 75. and Harold Black (Miramar) covered the course in 74. Both are gauging the pace of the greens better. C. J. Ward (Christchurch) also did a 74, as did F. Rutter, the unattached professional. Russell Hobbs (Napier), who did 73 on Thursday, was 10 strokes worse to-day. W. J. Davidge, the Shandon champion, finished up with an eagle 3 at the home hole (435 yards) to return a 75. C. E. Hollis, the Miramar champion, failed to get into the select 70 who will play the third and fourth rounds. He was in the SO’s to-day. Hutt Takes Teams’ Match. The Hutt club’s team won the O'Rorke vase with an aggregate for the quartet of 312. B. M. Silk did 75, J. L. Black 77, Rana Wagg 79 and F. Kembor 81. New Plymouth came next with .313 (A. E. Conway 78, D. Sutherland 77, F. E. Quin 80, G. M. Chong 78). Christchurch came third with 316 and Wellington fourth with 317. Arthur Duncan, D. C.

Collins and P. W. Blundell all broke SO, but E. W. Thurgood took 85. Everyone ie praying that the wind will behave itself, as Ngamotu is reported to be a most difficult course in a southerly. WOMEN’S TITLE First Round Results By Telegraph—Press Association Dunedin, October, 23. The first round of the Dominion women's golf championship was played on the Balmacewen links to-day in fine but slightly breezy weather, which, however, was a distinct improvement on the conditions ruling the previous day. The fairways and greens were very fast, and a few competitors found soma difficulty in controlling the ball on the putting surfaces, but nevertheless the standard of golf maintained during the round was high. Only five of the games scheduled .for the round were played, the sixth going by default. Results were as follows: — Miss B. Rutherford (Christchurch) defeated Miss P. Lane (North Otago), 2 and 1. , , , Miss E. White-Parsons (Christchurch) won from Mrs. J. C. Finlay (Titirangi) by default. Mrs. Jarvis (Miramar) defeated Mrs. A. H. Gamble (Otago), 2 and 1. Miss D. Petrie (Miramar) defeated Mrs. McLean (St. Clair), 5 and 4. Miss C. Wilson (Masterton) defeated Mrs. D. Miller (Nelson), 3 and 2. Miss J. Dunean (Wanganui) defeated Mrs. Speirs (Invercargill), 2 and 1.
