JEAN BATTEN ON WAY TO WELLINGTON
Arrival by Motor-car
LEAVING TRAIN EARLY THIS MORNING Although Miss Jean Batten boarded the southbound Limited express at Frankton Junction last night, she will not reach Wellington by rail this morning. Arrangements were made yester,. day for her to leave the train early to-day and motor to Wellington, arriving “some time in the morning before 11 o’clock.” Miss Batten was in Hamilton yesterday and last evening. She left at 9.25 p.m. after completing her theatrical engagement.
This morning’s rendezvous for the motor-car which will bring her to Wellington was not disclosed yesterday by those in Wellington who are in charge of .Miss Batten’s itinerary. She intends to take advantage of the motor journey to discuss pressing business affairs with her Wellington representatives.
The Limited express, in the ordinary course of events, does not stop between Paekakariki and Wellington. It reaches Palmerston North at 6.44 a.m. and departs at 6.53 a.m., then makes a nonstop run to Paekakariki; arriving at 8.26 a.m. and departing at 8.34 a.m. It is highly likely that Paekakariki residents early astir will witness the transfer. Miss Batten will be motored direct to the Hotel St. George. It was stated yesterday that this would avoid the delay associated with a public arrival at the railway station, and would enable her to fulfil a number of business engagements before the first of her theatre appearances. ‘A civic reception will be tendered Miss Batten in the Town Hall at 10.30 a.m. to-morrow.
