DANGER OF ABORTION
“Widespread Practice”
DR. CORKILL’S WARNING
By Telegraph—Frees Association.
Auckland, October 22.
“We have received evidence to show that the practice of abortion is very widespread throughout all classes ol the community,” said Dr. T. F. Corkill (Wellington), acting-chairman ol the committee set up under the authority of the Minister of Health to consider the problem. The committee sat i neamera to-day in the Auckland Hospital Board rooms, but Dr. Corkill issued a statement later. The members are to leave this evening for Wellington.
The committee had no general statement to make at present, Dr. Corkill said, but one point had been impressed on members —namely, the general lack of appreciation of the danger of induction of abortion not only to the immediate life of the patient, but also to subsequent health. “It is desirable that as much publicity as possible be given to this danger,” he said, “because women’s organisations have told us that far too many women undertake the operation without full realisation of the danger involved. Medical witnesses have also impressed on us their experience of the evils which have resulted from the practice. Evidence ou similar lines was given at Auckland to-day.
