Yesterday afternoon the’employers’ and women assistants’ assessors sat in conciliation in an attempt to agree as to conditions for such assistants. The assessors were :—

Employers: Messrs. A. W. Nisbet, N, M. Irwin, E. R. AVimsett, and W. P. Summerville.

Employees: Mr. F. Cornwell, Mr. L. R.iugh, Miss A. Cotpen, and Mrs. E. Kirker (AVellington). "Very creditable work has been put in here to-day,” said the commissioner at the conclusion of the sitting when a complete agreement had been reached. “It shows that dentists and their assistants are endowed with a considerable amount of common sense, in getting together and making this agreement. It is really an excellent performance to meet in conciliation council for the first time and reach a complete ngrement.” During tlie course of discussion on the hours of work clause, speakers for the employers said it was impracticable and not in the public interest to attempt to carry on their profession without having nurses in attendance all the time. Nurses were indispensable to dentists and they recognised that. , For a while it seemed that hours of work and wages questions were going to hold the proceedings up, but after both parties had conferred in private agreement was reached on all clauses.

It was agreed to adopt a 42-hour week, the hours to be worked between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on five days of the week and 5.30 a.m. and 12 noon on the weekly halfholiday. Existing wages are not to be reduced by’ the coming into effect of this award.

Overtime is to be paid at the rate of time and a half for the first three hours and double time thereafter. Holidays as in the technicians’ award were agreed upon and also clauses relating to payment of wages weekly, terms of employment, and the scope of the award.
