WELLINGTON SPRING RACES

Sir Charles Clifford’s Horses Win Treble

on First Day

FRANCIS DRAKE GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD

Main Handicap Events to Argentic and

Plato

(By

The Watcher.)

The feature of the racing on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham yesterday, was the winning form displayed by the representatives of Sir Charles Clifford, trained at Riccarton by H. and A. Cutts ; In five starts they secured three wins. The stable of F. Davis at Woodvi.le was also in the limelight with two wins, one each for his patrons, Messrs. F. Armstrong and T. H. Lowry. The days form altogether justified a revision of the fairly general assumption that the Dominion was beginning to lack horses of good.class. The wins of Francis Drake in the Wellesley Stakes, Plato in the Shorts Handicap, and Sir Charles Clifford’s two three-year-olds, Wild Chase 5 and Trench Fight, were accomplished in a manner stamping them as good horses.

To many racegoers the moct interesting feature of spring racing is the two-year-old form. At this stage of the season it is very attractive to study the emergence of the really good class form when euch exists. Yesterday the Stakes was won by a colt who promisee to be a very solid youngster when he ie fully developed. Francis Drake, w'ho won for Mr. F. Armstrong, giving him his first win in that event, was bred by his owner, and is by Chief Ruler from Tame Duck, an English-bred mare. He is a full-brother to Admiral Drake, a good class horse in his time and also the best stayer sired by the defunct Chief Ruler. Admiral Drake ran second in the New Zealand Cup and won the Auckland Cup. Francis Drake was having only his third race. He first appeared at Marton last month, when he was narrowly defeated by Greenwich,'also by Chief Ruler, and on whom he turned the tables yesterday. In the meantime Francis Drake also went to Auckland, where he won the Welcome Stakes, defeating' Elanage, who yesterday was relegated to third place. Included in yesterday’s field were also .the-two’principal winners in the South Island, Card Player and Guinea Fowl, so that in this first real clash of two-year-old form the North Island has emerged with the honours, and Francis Drake won easily, the best. His time yesterday was equal to the second best ever recorded in the race.

, The principal handicap provided a stirring finish, the favourite Hunting Cat, who had tailed the field for a mile and a quarter, just failing to get up . to, the winner, Argentic. There is no doubt that he was very unlucky, but this does not detract from the merit of Argentic’s success. He was paraded in very good order and ran up to his best form, returning his supporters one of the doublefigure dividends of the day. The surprise of the day was orougbt off by Plato in the Shorts Handicap. Plato whs having his’first race of the season. He has grown into a handsome horse, and on yesterday’s form looks like justifying the high opinion that, has always been held of him. His dam Kilteel is a sister to Kilboy, one of New Zealand’s highest class three-year-olds of any time. The other open race was won by the three-year-old Wild Chase, another to be recorded a winner in his first start of the season. Considering the usual trickiness of spring form, hunters, who did not start spring form punters, who did not start over-well, did not fare so badly, for four straight-out win and place favourites won, while another in Hunting Cat was unlucky not to do so. Double-figure dividends. however, accompanied the wins of Brigadore, in the Hurdles, and of Argentic and Plato in the principal handicaps, while there were one~or two excellent prices for places during the day. The South Island won its full share of the money. Starting off with a third in the hurdle race, the southerners won the second race, ran first and second in the third race, first and third in the fifth race, third in the seventh race, and first again in the last race. The weather was fine, with bright sunshine for most of the afternoon, and a cool breeze from the south-west. Conditions were really excellent, and the track was firm and fast. The new totalisator proved a great asset, enabling betting to be done with a minimum of delay. At no stage was the programme more than three minutes behind schedule, and the day concluded with the last race being run right on time. Totalisator investments were £26,879/10/- (win £12,375, place £14,504/10/-). There was no corresponding day last year. All the arrangements worked very smoothly, and Mr. Price was in good form at the starting barrier. Favourite Runs Poorly. Merry Lap was favourite for the Glen Hurdles Handicap, but he ran a bad race. He hit the third fence by the seven furlongs very hard and dropped back, finally finishing at the tail of the field —-a very disappointing performance. Royal King made the running with Lord Yal and Sporting Song handy. Lord Vai fell back over the concluding stages, but Sporting Song took the lead off Royal King on the turn and Wexford Bridge put in an appearance on the outer, with Brigadore also making a forward move. Sporting Song and Brigadore drew out over the concluding stages; and m a hard finish Brigadore wore his opponent down. Wexford Bridge was a moderate third with Royal King fourth followed by Red Rufus with Journet and Merry Lap in the rear of the field. Brigadore won solidly. lie made one faulty jump at the five furlongs, but quickly recovered,;and ran on very solidly at the end. Sporting Song’s performance was very good. He was there all the way and only gave in to the winner over the last half-furlong. Wexford Bridge may improve, as he was a long way back early, and came outside everything over the concluding stages. Won All the Way. ' Counterblast scored a decisive win in the two-year handicap, leading practically all the way. Brunhilde, on the rails, Aureus, and Cute Melody -showed up with her to the course proper, where Aureus ran right off the track. Counterblast then drew clear, and never looked like losing. Son and Heir, coming from just behind Brunhilde, wore her down at the finish to gain second money by a head. Nuclei came through on the rails for fourth with Geira, Cute Melody, and Accomplice next. There did not appear anything outstanding in the field, but Counterblast's performance was quite a smart one. Her stable-mate, Lazybones, on the other hand, finished at the rear of the field, but he got badly interfered with early. Geira appeared to have every chance, being well enough placed as they came into the straight. Nuclei ran a creditable race and looks like adding to the good record of this family. A Good Three-year-old. Wild Chase justified his favouritism in the Wainui Handicap by winning very solidly. ' Boomerang and Tunneller began best with Tiger Gain, but Tunneller did not hold his place long on the rails, going back to the rear of the field. Deficit then ran through to the front and piloted Boomerang, Snowball, Sinking Fund,

Tiger Gain, and Wild Chase to the straight, where Sinking Fund had moved up fast on the outside, and Tunneller came through from the rear. Deficit was beaten at the distance, but Tunneller and Wild Cbase’drew away with Sinking Fund and in a great battle home Wild Chase hung on well to beat Tunneller by half a length with Sinking Fund only a neck away. There was a gap to the fourth horse, Snowball, and then came Boomerang, Werohia, and Tiger Gain. This was Wild Chase's first start of the season, as he had to be given a short spell after returning from Wanganui with bad knees. He won like a good-class colt, and it is to be hoped that the knee trouble will not recur. Tunneller ran a very solid race and might have done better had he not drawn No. 1, as he is a slow beginner. Sinking Fund ran well up to his Auckland form, and both Snowball and Boomerang ran good races, while Deficit showed a lot of early pace. Werohia loomed up as a possibility ,at the false rail, but he did not go on with it.

Favourite Wins Easily

The had; sprint was a good thing for the favourite and topweight, Ben Braggie. Mittie.led him to the straight, where Sardius and Finnesko were also prominent, but once in line Ben Braggie drew right past the leader and won comfortably. Taitoru came from the ruck to beat 1 Mittie over the last furlong. Sea Wrack was a moderate fourth, followed by Caen, Finnesko, and Le Touquet. The winner outclassed the field, and is a sprinter above the ordinary. Taitoru, who has not raced for over two years, went down very well in his preliminary, and, properly placed, will still win races. Mittie should be improved with the race. She put up an excellent performance, and looks like another good performer out of that great mare, Horomea. There was solid backing for Sardius, but he disappointed. He was handy in behind the leaders coming on to the course proper, but he collapsed badly from the false rail home.

Hunting Cat Unlucky.

Hunting Cat, a firm favourite for the principal handicap, was very unlucky. Chopped out at the start, be was last with Master Brierly all the way in the running, and was still in the rear position three furlongs from home. Judiciously handled from that stage onward, he threaded his way through the field, until from an apaprenitly hopeless position he was a hot challenger over the last furlong. However, he just failed to get up by the barest margin. Shy and Epris made the running from Red Manfred and Rona Bay, others handy being Davolo, Argentic and Grand Jury. Davolo and Argentic moved up handy to the leaders entering the straight, and at the false rail this Riccarton pair began to sort themselves out. A little later on, however, it was clear that Argentic had the upper hand of Davolo, and Hunting Cat then flashed through with a remarkable run from the rear, and Argentic, instead of winning fairly comfortably, had to be ridden out to stall off ithe favourite, who only just failed to get up. Davolo was a fair third, but he weakened at the finish. Master Brierly was fourth, followed by Korero, Shy and Grand Jui'y.

Argentic loked well and ran right up to his form, but there 'is no doubt had Hunting Cat been well placed at any part of the running, he musit have won. Davolo ran one of his good races, but it looked clear that the distance was just a bit beyond him. Master Briefly putup a greait effort to finish fourth, and, as he is a little backward yet, he will be improved by the race. Red Manfred disappointed badly, disappearing as a possible contender over five furlongs from home. The others were well beaten, though Korero ran a good race. A Good Class Youngster.

The Wellesley Stakes was a good thing for the favourite, Francis Drake. After a little delay at the start, caused mainly by Greenwich and Jolly, the latter pair -were smartest out of the barrier, and led to the straight from Francis Drake and Elanage, Atalanta Lass, who drew number one, having got chopped out at the start. Jolly weakened at the false rail, but Greenwich hung on. She had no chance, however, with Francis Drake, as once he made his run he ran past her with ease and won on the bit. Elanage ■was a moderate third, and further back Jolly just got fourth from Guinea Fowl and Screamer. Francis Drake won like a good class colt, and his time equalled the second best of the race. He ca nbe improved a lot yet. Greenwich has a lot of pace and easily beat the others, but some of them will improve w'ith racing. Outsider Turns Up. A fresh horse in Plato, having bis first race of the season, scored a surprise win in the open sprint, but he did his work well. The most prominent to the course proper were Paper Slipper and Knockiin, just ahead of Pakanui and Laughing Lass, with Dollar Bill, who lost ground at the start, tailing off. Once in line Paper Slipper and Knockfin collapsed, and Laughing Lass had charge from Pakanui, but Plato finished solidly on the inner and ran on well for a decisive win over Laughing Lass, while Dollar Bill finished with an electric run to cut out Pakanui on the post for third money. Then came Lavina, Knockfin and Omarere. Plato, who hag grown into a fine-look-ing horse, won well. Laughing Lass ran up to her recent consistent form which, however, was not good enough for the winner. Paper Slipper was well back at the finish, and was not knocked about after being beaten, Pakanui ran a good race. Dollar Bill put up a remarkable performance, as he lost ground, as usual, through his own fault, at the start, and finished with a wonderful run, after giving away a lot of ground, over the last three furlongs. Another Good Colt. The last race produced a good class tbree-year-old in Trench Fight, lie got out well, but half-way through the running had dropped back, Rustem, Brazen King and Cricket all leadjng him round the turn. Rustem ran on well, but finally Trench Fight, Cricket and Braken King

' bunched past him in a great race. Brazen King was the first to weaken, but Cricket hung on to his rival very grimly. Trench Fight, however, was too good, and at the post was drawing away. Brazen King weakened a little over the last furlong. Contract headed the bunch, with Entheus and Rustem next. , The winner gave Sir Charles Clifford bis third winning representative of the day, all ridden by G. Humphries. He is a full-brother to Fracas and looks likeimproving into one of the leading class three-year-olds of the season. This was only his second race. Cricket ran a very good race, but Brazen King was a trifle disappointing. However, he went up to the leaders a little early, which was probably the reason he did not run on so well as was expected. These three-year-olds really outclassed the opposition, but Entheos was finishing on well. Details of the Racing GLEN HURDLES HANDICAP, of £300; second £6O. third £3O. One mile and a half. 7/7 B. C.
