A GIRL who just happened to be on Watson’s'Bay beach, Sydney, when Zane Grey returned one day from a deep-sea fishing expedition has been offered a film contract in Hollywood by the author-film producer. She is Nola Warren, 17-year-old star in Zane Grey's “White Death,” and no girl ever owed her chance of film success to a more trivial incident.
The circumstances were that when Zane Grey and his manager and film director, Mr. Edwin G. Bowen, were landing on the beach, Mr. Bowen handed his camera to a girl—Nola Warren —standing nearby. The girl was not noticed at the moment, but when Mr.
QO rare are expert native turban wrappers, that Jamiel Hasson, alone, had the difficult task of wrapping all the turbans worn by stars and extras in David O. Selznick’s United Artists technicolour production, “The Garden of Allah.” starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer. Hasson, who is also technical director, had personally to wrap the turbans of Miss Dietrich and every other player down to the most insignificant atmosphere player.
Grey and Mr. Bowen went to retrieve the camera they were both immediately struck by her appearance. Then and there they decided that she should play the leading feminine role in their film, and the author’s Hollywood offer is evidence that they are now well satisfied with that quick decision. “Nola Warren typifies the great Australian out-or-doors,” said Mr. Bowen. “She is so delightfully unsophisticated and seems to brim over with health and youthful exuberance,’’ says Zane Grey.
While Australian girls have gone to England and America and have secured motion picture contracts, Miss Warren is the first screen actress who has been offered an overseas contract in the country.
Zane Grey has returned to America, and if she decides to accept his offer, Miss Warren will follow later.
