SUCCESS OF SPRING SHOW

Horticultural Society Meeting

At a general committee meeting of the Wellington Horticultural Society held on Tuesday night it was reported that the spring show had been one of the most successful yet held. The entries had been smaller than usual, as owing to the early spring many growers, particularly those in the daffodil classes, missed the show. This had somewhat limited the competitive exhibits, but there had been some fine private displays. The president, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, in her review of the show, said that the society was indebted to the many exhibitors both in the decorative and private displays. The colourful exhibit from the private garden of Mr, J. J. Reich was the winner in the competition for the Arnold Izard Memorial Trophy given for the “most meritorious exhibit in the show.” The meeting passed a vote of thanks to exhibitors, with special reference to Mrs. E. Riddiford for her polyanthus display and to Mr. Reich for his special exhibit. The women’s committee which had charge of the afternoon tea arrangements moved n vote of thanks to members who had been so liberal with gifts of cakes. It was deckled to commence again the holding of flower circles, the first to be held on November 10. when the rose will be the subject of discussion. Specimen blooms will be displayed. The following committee was elected to organise these circles: Air. N. A. Grant (convener) and Messrs. G. C. Clarke. H. J. Crewes, R. M. Porteous and W. D. Rough. Preliminary arrangements were made for the rose show which is to be held in

the Town Hall on Wednesday, November 25. Garden lovers are invited to enter for the competition for the best garden growing native flora and for which the trophy is the handsome Viscount Bledisloe Trophy. The largeness of the garden is not the deciding factor in this competition, and the gardener with limited space has every chance.
