‘WAIT AND SEE’ POLICY

Local Bodies and State

Housing

Tlie “wait and see” attitude of local bodies on housing was referred to by Hie Prime Minister, Jit. Hon. M. .1, Savage, in replying in th<; House of Representatives yesterday to Mr. C. H. Burnett (Government, Tauranga). '.Mr. Savage said the provisions in the State Advances Corporation Act under which the corporation may make loans to local authorities to provide workers’ dwellings had been brought under the notice of local authorities throughout the Dominion. Some local bodies had announced their intention of helping with the problem of overcoming the housing shortage. Although the Government was not yet in full possession of local bodies’ proposals in the matter, it was hoped that support would be forthcoming in those areas where the need for more houses was most acute.
