SPANISH CIVIL WAR

British Labour Party’s

Attitude

NON-INTERVENTION POLICY

British Official Wireless.)

Rugby. October 5.

The annual conference of the Labour Party opened this morning in Edinburgh, Mrs. J. L. Adamson presiding over an attendance of about 750 delegates.

In her speech. Mrs. Adamson demanded the abolition of the household means test and criticised the Government housing programme. Referring to the international situation, she demanded strengthening of the League. What was needed was readiness on the part of statesmen to act upon the convictions of the peoples they represented. The chief desire of the peoples was for peace. She expressed the sympathy of the conference with their comrades in Spain.

The conference passed, by 1.836,000 votes to 510.000, a resolution supporting the policy of non-intervention in the Spanish civil war. Mr. Arthur Greenwood reminded the delegates that the policy was one for which the Socialist head of the Popular Front Government in France, M. Leon Blum, admitted responsibility. The initiative came from M. Blum’s Government and received the support of Soviet Russia. It had become the united opinion of Europe, Socialist and non-idealist, said Mr. Greenwood, that non-intervention was the real way out of a very grave and serious situation.
