HUTT VALLEY NEWS

Mr. A. J- Mazengarb delivered an address at this month’s meeting of the Eastbourne branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs. B. W. Wise presided. Vocal items were given by Mesdames Dowler, Ponder, Ayson and Foley. Congratulations to the town clerk and general manager, Mr. C. L. Bishop, upon the way in which he had presented the borough’s case before the Transport Licensing Authority, were extended by the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. All the main bridges in the Butterfly reserve have been completed and only three dr four small culverts remained to be done,, Mr. J. Bennett, caretaker of reserves, reported to the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. Several wet patches on the tracks had been successfully drained and the tracks were now in a better condition. A suggestion that “mystery hikes” should be organised by the Eastbourne Borough Council, was contained in the report of the" caretaker of reserves, Mr. J. Bennett, before last night’s meeting of the council. The Mayor, Mr. E. W. Wise, said he thought the reserves committee was favoui-.ble, but the matter would be considered at the next meeting. A road is being built up the hill near the main entrance of the Taita cemetery to give access to the new Methodist and Roman Catholic blocks. It is intended that the road should finish at the top of the hill, and a turning place is to be made for funeral eoaches l but it may be later continued down to the western entrance. The cemetery board has decided also to open up a new block fop the Church of England near the western entrance and to build a road. The plots here will be among the best in the cemetery, so an extra charge will be made for them.

EASTBOURNE’S RATES

Satisfactory Payment Satisfaction at the manner in which the rates were being paid was expressed by Mr. O. L. Bishop, town clerk and general manager, at last night’s meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council. “To the end of August £7lBO had been, collected on account of rates, as against £6330 for the corresponding period last year,” he reported. “Of the amount collected, approximately £6600 was on account of the current year, and the balance. £6OO, on account of arrears. “The payments on account of current rates, together with discount allowances, represent approximately 64 per cent, of the total rates levied for the year. Prior to discount day last year, approximately 56 per cent, of the total had been collected, so the collections this year show a very substantial improvement. _ “The arrears outstanding are. being gradually reduced, and the position is steadily improving.”

SERVICE FOR AMBULANCE

Petone Resident Praised “I want to congratulate our colleague, Mr. W. H. Edwards, of Petone, on having personally collected the sum of £9 10/- for the Free Ambulance,” said the president, Mr. O. J. B. Norwood, at the Free Ambulance Board meeting yesterday. A man might give something out of his pocket. That was only the act of giving, but when, a man took the trouble to .call on dozens of people and collect such a sum in small amounts, he suggested the type of service that made some of them fetel rather ashamed of themselves. It was the type of service that could not be bought. He congratulated Air. Edwards on the excellent spirir he had shown. In replying, Mr. Edwards said that the money he had collected had been mostly in small amounts. He was well known in Petone and he had not been refused yet. Air. Edwards thanked Mr. Norwood for the kind remarks.

INTER-CLUB TENNIS

Opening Date, October 31 Inter-club matches under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis ,SubAssociation will begin, on Saturday, October 31, it was decided at the first meeting of the management committee. Entries are to close on October 16. Mr. G. Winter was elected chairman, and the following sub-committees were appointed:—lnter-club: .’Messrs. H. G. Flux (convener), A. G. Smith. G. Winter, J. Annear and. G. Armstrong. Tournaments: .Messrs. A. G. Smith (convener), F. Stoupe. R. D. Smith, W. E. Jarman. Postponements: Messrs. A. G. Smith and H. G. Flux. Ranking: Messrs. J. Charters (convener), J. Annear, ( A. G. Smith. Publicity: Mr. F. Stoupe. Ways and means of obtaining association courts were discussed, and Messrs R. D. -Smith and Stoupe were appointed to bring down proposals. It was decided to proceed with a queen carnival in aid of the grounds fund, as suggested by Mr. R. D. Smith, for about two months before Christmas. Messis Smith. Stoupe, Charters and Annear were constituted a sub-committee to arrange the particulars with the dubs. It was decided to apply for the following tournament dates: Labour Day, mem’s and women’s singles; Anniversary Day, men’s and women’s doubles; Easter, combined doubles.

VALLEY CRICKET

Opening Day Fixed Provided that grounds are ready, the inter-club matches of the Hutt Valley Cricket Association will begin on October 17, the management committee decided on Wednesday night. Applications for affiliation and wickets will close on October 3, after which the grading of teams will be announced. It was also decided to approach the Wairarapa association with the object of arranging a match for a team of colts. Representative fixtures were made as follows: December 26 and 27, v. Wellington Mercantile League, in the Hutt Valley; January 1 and 2, v. Christchurch City and Suburban Association, in the Hutt Valley; January 1 and 2, v. Hutt Cricket Club, in the Hutt Valley; Anniversary Day, v. Horowhenua association, at Levin; Easter match, v. Wanganui. Mr. J. F. May was instructed to inquire into the question of obtaining a standardised monogram and blazer for the association. Messrs. H. N. Jones and W. McDonna were appointed to attend a meeting of the Hutt Valley Umpires’ Association.

CAR FOR DISTRICT NURSE

The purchase of a motor-car for the use of the district nurse at Upper Hutt was decided upon at last night’s meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board.
