WORK OF PARLIAMENT

Debate on Public Works Policy To-morrow MORTGAGE ADJUSTMENT • The Government’s public works policy is likely to be discussed at length in the House of Representatives to-morrow, when members will be given the opportunity of a debate on the Public Works Statement, which was presented in the House last Wednesday by- the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple. Although much of the matter contained in the Statement had been anticipated on frequent occasions by ministerial announcements, members are certain to find plenty of material for comment. - The Land and Income Tax (Annual) Bill, which was introduced' nearly a fortnight ago, may be proceeded with later in the week. This will provide an opportunity for a discussion on the Government’s proposals for the alteration' of the taxes, which will probably be taken up again at a later stage when the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill' comes before the House.

It is possible that the Local Body Reform Bill, which provides for the amalgamation of local bodies and the simplification generally of local government, may be introduced during the week. It will be circulated to interested organisations for comment and suggestions before being dealt with by the House. Another measure which is likely to come before the House in the near future is the Workers Compensation Amendment Bill, designed to improve workers’ compensation to a certain extent and to remove anomalies in existing enactments. Considering the magnitude of the measure and the fact that it had to be amended very substantially, satisfactory progress Was made with the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Bill during last week, when the second reading was completed and 46 out .of 84 clauses were agreed to in committee. The Bill is hardly attracting the attention either in the House or throughout the country that might be expected of so important a measure, and it is fully expected that it will be passed without a great deal of difficulty this week.
