MANAWATU GORGE
Beautifying Society’s Work
Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 20. The Manawatu Gorge Beautifying Society' has decided to continue its tree and shrub-planting operations in the Gorge, weekly on Saturdays, the first of such meetings taking place yesterday afternoon. The society has also resolved to approach Mr. J. J. Stevenson, agricultural master at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, with a view to enlisting the aid of some of the boys to do the initial heavy digging. The members of the society taking part in the beautifying work are divided into groups, each group working on a section between marked telegraph poles. Already quite a distance has been planted, and the trees and shrubs planted a fortnight ago have nearly all started to grow. Motorists’ Lucky Escape. Two women motorists travelling from Palmerston North toward Linton in a latest model medium-sized limousine had a very lucky escape from possible serious injury shortly before 2 o'clock this afternoon. The car was travelling at about 25 miles an hour and on approaching the dreaded “Devil’s Elbow’’ at Linton the driver braked slightly to negotiate the bend. Without warning the car swung completely about in the loose metal, shot backward across the road, and finished in a deep ditch, facing the direction from which it had been coming. A large ser-vice-car, with six passengers, was travelling close l>ehind the car, and the driver had to stand on his brakes to pull his ton-and-a-half omnibus to a standstill a yard from the car. When the small car shot backward across the road, it missed the slowly moving service-car by less than a foot. The small car was assisted out of the ditch, undamaged. The passengers- were not hurt.
