Poneke Club’s 50-Mile Race

KEIGHLEY WINS DUTTON CUP The Poneke Amateur Cycling Club on. Saturday held an open event of 50 miles, which started and finished at the Central Eire Station. The winner of the Dutton Cup for first place, W. Keighley (Port Nicholson) scored rather decisively, finishing H minutes ahead of K. Ulmer and R. Evans (Poneke), who were second and third respectively. O. Disley and G. Arney (Port Nicholson) won the time honours, the former winning the sprint-in in good style. Dutton (Poneke) and J. Wilson (Port Nicholson) who were second and third fastest in the “50” provincial championship the previous week, were beaten by the 4-minute and 9-minute groups for the honours. R. Triplow (Petone) was rather unlucky; he had a puncture after riding 45 miles, and when riding with the groups who won-second and thirl places. Results: W. Keighley (Port Nicholson), 17m. 2.18.58, 1; R. Ulmer (Poneke), 9m., ’2.12.17, 2; R. Evans (Poneke), 12m . 2.15.18, 3. Fastest times: O. Disley (Port Nichplson), 4m., 2.11-2, 1; G. Amey (Port Nicholson), 4m., 2.11.3, 2; R. Ulmer (Poneke), 9m., 2.12.11, 3. The 13 miles junior race was won by H. Sparkes (6m.), 42.30, with H. Kent (Petone), Im., finishing second, and returning the fastest time of 37.54. OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, September 20. In the 50-mile Otago road cycling championship event R. Seymour, of the Technical club, Christchurch, gained first place, beating J. J. Taylor, of the Papanui club, by half a minute, the latter riding from tne scratch mark and gaining fastest time. C. Robinson, of Invercargill, won the Otago championship, registering the fastest time for an Otago rider. Record entries were received for the event, which was the most successful race staged by the Otago centre. Seven riders of the Technical club, Christchurch, competed, while the Papanui club, also of Christchurch, sent down eight riders. The Invercargill club had entered 11 and the Dunedin club 15.
