TENSION AT PAKHOI EASED

■Chinese Army Withdraws Shanghai, September 17. The tension of Pakhoi has been eased by the withdrawal of the Chinese nineteenth army, thus permitting the Japanese to land and investigate the outrage. A Canton cable dated September 13 stated that grave concern had followed the refusal of the Chinese Nineteenth Army t 0 allow Japanese officers to land at Pakhoi from the gunboat Sagi to investigate . the murder of a Japanese named Nakano. Remonstrances by Chinese officials aboard a warship from Canton were unavailing, despite the presence of a Japanese squadron. The "Daily Mail’s” Tokio correspondent had previously reported that following the murder of a Japanese merchant, Junzo Nakano, by a Chinese mob at Pakhoi, the naval authorities had ordered part of the thirteenth destroyer flotilla to proceed there from Shanghai, and also the gunboat Sagi with diplomatic investigators aboard. It issued simultaneously a statement that the naval authorities would insist on a thorough settlement of all crimes against Japan in China.
