Fairy Bread. This is a useful recipe, as the bread can be liked in an emergency if you run out of ordinary bread. The Ingredients are: 2 cups flour, 1 dessertspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, pinch Of salt, 1 egg, J-cup milk (or a little more). Make into a nice light dough aqd bake as a loaf in a slow oven.—Mrs. H.D., Wanganui.
Unusual Sandwich Fillings. Have you tried any of these: —Chopped young mint leaves mixed with chives, grated cheese and a dash of salt, spread between brown bread and butter; shelled peanuts, Barcelona nuts and a few walnuts, mashed with banana and a shredded apple, spread on thin bread and butter; grated cheese mixed with blackberry jam for a tasty sandwich filling.—" Alys.” Masterton.
Wallpaper Hint. Wallpaper can be cleaned with oatmeal applied with a dftmp cloth. Rub gently, paving particular attention to stained parts. If the wallpaper is varnished, rub lightly with a cloth wrung out in strong cold tea, allow to dry, then polish with a pad of soft cloth. Jam Making Hints. When malting jam, instead of using if wooden spoon, use a tish slice. When stirrlngthe jam, the bottom edge of the slice scrapes any jam that is inclined to settle on.the bottom of the saucepan
and prevents the jam from burning.— Mrs. K„ Foxton.
New Uses for Apple Peelings. NOver throw apple peelings away. They should be put into an earthenware jar. with a little sugar and water and lemon rind. When making apple tarts or pies, add this liquid instead of water. It improves Wie flavour of the tart considerably; well worth trying.— Mrs. L. Clive.
Parsnip Jelly. Scrape lib. of parsnip, dice and cook till tender in water with the inice mid rind of 2 lemons; turn into jelly bag and drip; measure juice, _u.sing 1 cup to 1 cup of sugar. Boil 15 minutes and bottle while hot.—Meg.
