Stocking Wisdom
Before they are worn for the first time stockings should be rinsed in salt and water. For stains on the feet of stockings rub with a piece of lemon which has been dipped in salt. Eucalyptus oil should be used for grease spots on stockings. Stockings which are stained with sea water should be washed in hot milk. Grass stains can be removed with methylated spirits. Tar stains are difficult to remove, but much can be done by alternate applications of petrol and olive oil. When washing dark stockings rinse in cold water to which vinegar has been added. A little methylated spirit added to the rinsing water makes stockings look more silky. Borax removes marks and stains from golf and tennis socks without harming the fabric. Soak in borax and warm water for a time before washing in the ordinary way.
To remove scorched flavour from food, such as porridge, milk, soup, etc., place saucepan instantly in cold water for five minutes or longer, and then put food into clean pan.
