PARTIAL AGREEMENT
Cable-car Workers’ Award A partial agreement was reached in Conciliation Council yesterday in the dispute between the Kelburn and Karori Tramway Co., Ltd., and its employees. Mr. M. J. Reardon, conciliation commissioner, presided. The assessors were —Employees: Messrs. W.-N. Broadley (advocate), W. Sant and C. S. Morton. Employers: Messrs. W. J. Mountjoy (agent). C. Cox and J. Darling. The rates of wages asked by the employees were: Gripmen, 2/5 an hour; ropeman, 2/6; cleaners, 2/3s; relief, 2/5; general hands, 2/5; and clippers, 1/3$L The wages counter-claimed by the employers were: Gripnien. 2/3} an hour; ropemen, 2/5; cleaners, 2/2s; general hands, 2/3}; and ticket clerks, 1/3. The workers claimed an annual holiday cf 15 consecutive days for all employees who were required to work on public and statutory holidays. It was decided to submit the clause governing the rate of pay for Sunday work to the Court of Arbitration for settlement. It was agreed to work a 40-hour week in shifts of eight hours a day. The wages agreed upon were: Gripmen, 2/4 an hour; ropemen, 2/5; general hands, 2/4; cleaners, 2/3; ticket clerks, 1/3. It was decided that all employees who were required to work on public and statutory holidays were to receive, on completion of each year of service, an annual holiday of two consecutive weeks involving a payment of 96 working hours at ordinary rates of pay. The award is for one year. •
