Steward and Purser’s Boy Appear For Sentence
The two former members of the crew of the Rangitane who were involved in the theft of £4lO to money, and letters of credit and a bank draft valued at £3OO, when the ship was en route from Panama to Wellington, appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court at Wellington yesterday. Frederick James, steward, aged 26, whom the court had no power to deport, was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years, and Peter John Frederick Ransom, purser’s bov, aged 16. was remanded to the Children’s Court for sentence, it having been previously held by the Court of Appeal that this was the only court which had jurisdiction In such a case. Mr. Justice Smith presided. Arrangements have been made for James, a first offender, to leave New Zealand.
