BUILDERS BUSY

♦ Palmerston Trade Brisk MANAWATU NOTES Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 17. The building and allied trades in Palmerston North continue to be brisk, a condition which has now been ruling for some time. There is scarcely a qualified builder, carpenter or joiner in the ranks of the city’s unemployed, all such tradesmen finding full time employment without difficulty. Supply merchants are also experiencing a boom, and timber, and joinery factories are working at high pressure. At least six commercial buildings are being erected, while numerous otuers are undergoing alteration. Manynew residences are also rising within the city boundaries.

Pahiatua Water Supply. Members of the Pahiatua Borougu Council and Mr. 11. F. Toogood, consulting engineer, of Wellington, held a discussion last night on the question of augmenting Pahiatua’s water supply. The Mayor, Mr. T. D. Wilson, presided, and explained the history of the proposals to date. The original Mangahao Kive.scheme had been estimated to cost £10,500, but the engineer had now made a thorough examination of the proposal, and considered the cost would be nearer £OO,OOO. He estimated a pumping scheme from the river to cost about £lO,OOO, which he considered a better plan than the gravitational scheme, Mr. Toogood considered that the supply from the pumps would be ample. After further brief discussion it was resolved that the engineer furnish a fresh report on the Mangahao pumping scheme, for submission to the Loans Board. Inter-club Rifle Shooting.

Firing on their own range in the Drill Hall last night, the Feilding Miniature Rifle Club’s team defeated Awahuri in a challenge for the Hopcroft Shield by 008 points to 009. The highest scorer for Feilding was K. Cossar with a total of 138 points, while the highest scorer, for Awahuri was F. Brock with 127 points. Kia Toa Cricket Club.

It was decided at last night’s annual meeting of the Kia Toa (Palmerstou North) Cricket Club to enter two teams for the competitions. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr. H. R. Crawford; president, Mr. G. Farrar; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. Mitchell; club captain, Mr. T. Jordan; auditor and gear steward, Mr. J. Croll; management committee, Messrs. Piercy, Croll, Morgan and Heatley, with power to add two playing members; delegate to the Manawatu association, Mr. Croll; coach, Mr. Jordan. Fire Board Meeting.

The Palmerston North Fire Board today decided to close the Terrace End fire station. The bell tower will be demolished and removed. The superintendent Mr. P. A. Milverton, stated that although the brigade’s pumps, drawing 250 gallons a minute, operated for half an hour, they would only lower the level of the water in the lakelet in the square by half an inch. Mr. Milverton said this indicated the potentialities of the lake as a source of supply in the event of a serious outbreak occurring in the locality.
