MILITARY BALL

Gay Masterton Scene

Wairarapa’s social year would not be complete without the annual military ball organised by the officers. N. and men of the WellingtonEast Coast Mounted Rifles and the C. and D. Companies of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment. Each year this event grows in popularity and on Wednesday night there was a brilliant scene in the Masterton Municipal Hall, where the ninth annual ball was held. The decorations were particularly gay and the colourful uniforms of the officers and the smart frocks of the womenfolk gave the scene a more than usually spectacular air. A huge paper Union Jack formed the centrepiece in the decorative scheme, which was carried out by Corporal J. Welch. Draped about the stage were flags of several nationalities, and the green and gold of the Hawke's Bay Regiment and the black and white of the Mounted Rifles were prominently displayed. The men’s, committee which assisted in the decorations comprised Lieut. I A. Hart, Staff Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers, C.M.S. A. McWhinnle, Q.M.S. C. Osborne, Sergeants N. Sutherland, R. Dickason, C. Newland, Corporals J. Welch. R. Johnston, Lance-Corporal A. Green,' Private R. Kilmister, and Trooper R. Todd. Excellent work was performed by the women’s committee, which consisted of Mesdames I. A. Hart, C. E. Rogers, C. Williams, J. Ninnes, A. Donald, B. Iveson, G. Beecroft, C. Cuff and A. Newland, who saw to it that the supper arrangements were of the usual high standard. The joint secretaries were Sergeant O. C. Johansen and Private S. Lamb, and the treasurer was Lieut. G. R. Jackson, and much of the success of the ball was due to their efficient treatment of the detail ararngements. An interesting event of the evening was a foil and sable display by members of the Wellington and Masterton Fencing Clubs.
