LAW STUDENTS’ MOOT

At a recent meeting of the Wellington Law Students’ Society n number of new counsel argued a case before Mr. H. H. Cornish, K.C. The question involved was whether a certain “grand competition scheme” organised J>y the students' association at Victoria College was a lottery within the provisons of the Gaming Act, 1908. A. prosecution had been made by the police, but, after hearing counsel, the judge decided that the appeal should be allowed. He gave some extremely helpful advice aud criticism to the counsel .who bad taken part. Messrs. W. L. Eilingbam aud B. I. Harding appeared for the appellants, and Messrs. H.’ G. Duncan and IT. J. Evans for the respondents. , A further meeting was held Inst Wednesday evening when another mock trial took place before Mr. O. C- Mazengarb. This was an action in tort by . a nurse who had Iteen injured in a motor nccident, the driver of the car being the doctor by whom she was employed. Some interesting questions of law were argma and the judge finally awarded the plan'tia £B2 damages without, costs. Messrs. H. K. C. Wild aud W. M. Willis appeared for the plaintiff, and Messrs. I. D. Campbell aud J, White for the defendants
