Need Planting Now The little iris stylosa is one of the most exquisite of mid-winter bloomers that can be desired. The roots should be planted within the next week or so, in a sunny position—the best site being at the foot of a north-facing wall or fence. The soil should be poor, rather than rich, as rich soil encourages the growth of foliage at the expense of the flowers. Free-flowering is ensured if some finely broken mortar rubble is worked into the soil.
This iris is a cheerful little grower, without any weaknesses other than a dread of frost—which should be guarded against. It takes a year or so to settle down and give of its best. Once planted, therefore, it should remain undisturbed for some years, v
