SADDLERS’ DISPUTE

Agreement in Council Complete agreement was reached on all clauses in the negotiations for an award between the Wellington Saddlers and Leather Bag Makers' Industrial Union of Employers and the Wellington Saddlers aud Leather Bag Makers Industrial Union of Workers. The employers wanted a 44-hour week and the following rates of pay: Journeymen, 2/41 an hour; youths, from 15/- at commencement to 40/- for the fourth year and 50/- for the fiftt year, with journeymen’s rates thereafter: female workers, 15/- at start, rising to 40/- in the fourth year, thereafter 45/-. The employees claimed for a 40-hour week and the following wages: Journeymen, 2/9 an hour; female stitchers and machinists, under 17 yeans of age £l/5/-. rising to £3/5/- when 21. after which ioumevwonien's rate, £3/10/-. It was agreed that 40 hours should constitute a week's work. The following are the rates of pay agreed to: Journeymen 2/71 an hour; youths, at commencement 15/-. rising to 42/0 for the fourth year and 52/0 for the fifth year, thereafter journeymen's rates: female workers. 15/- at start, rising to 42/6 in ’he fourth year, thereafter 47/6. The following holidays will be allowed without deduction from wages: Christmas Day, Boxing Day. New Year’s Ihiy, January 2, Anniversary Day. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day. Labour Day and King's Birthday. Weekly workers’ on completion of one year’s service are to be allowed holidays between Boxing Dav and New Year’s Day on full pay. The award is for a term of two years.
