LICENSING BICYCLES
Foxton Borough Council To Inquire Foxton, September 16. At its monthly meeting on Monday, the Foxton Borough Council decided to make Inquiries as to the possibility of licensing bicycles. Cyclists were provided with good, bitumen roads for which thej' paid nothing, said Cr. D. R. Barron. They took up a good half of the road and frequently rode at night without lights, to the danger of other traffic, and he thought it time they were licensed as suggested by the Minister of Transport. The question of increasing the fees charged hawkers was also raised. Investigations showed that local bodies had no power in this connection, as the licensing was governed by statute, which provided a maximum fee of 10/- per annum for hawkers of perishable goods and £1 for all others. Mention was made of the detrimental effect hawkers had on business in Foxton, but no action was taken.
