FISH RESEARCH
Use of Part of Licence Fees Provision for acclimatisation societies to contribute toward the cost of fresh-water fisheries research is made in the Fisheries Amendment Bill, introduced by Governor-General's message in the House of Representatives last night.. In the terms of«tlie Bill, regulations may be made under the principal Act providing for the issue of. fishing licences by acclimatisal ion societies at prescribed fees. The rcgu latioug may also require the societies to pay into the Consolidated Fund a portion of the aggregate licence fees, and these moneys arc to be applied by the Minister of Marine in defraying expenses incurred in research into fresh water fisheries.
Explaining the Bill, the Minister of Marine, lion. P. Fraser, said the licence fee charged by acclimatisation societies for fishing was now £l. After the legislation was passed it was proposed by the societies to increase the licence fee to £l/5/-. and the fee would be uniform throughout New Zealand. Part of the fee would be devoted to fresh-water fish research. It was important that (he Bill should be passed within the next few days in order tbal the acclimatisation societies could have their new licences printed.
