CRICKET LEADER

Praise in Old Boys’ Club Report “Mention cannot be made of repreeentative -matches without referring to the magnificent performances of J. R. Laniaeon, who captained the Wellington side last year in all its engagements,” states the annual report of the Wellington College Old Boys’ Cricket Club. “His astute leadership, together with the example both of his batting when the team was in a bad position, and of his brilliance in the field, contributed in no small measure to the winning of the Plunket Shield, and to the victory over the visiting English eleven. B. Griffiths, too, by his last season’s performances, has shown that he is now the best spin bowler in New Zealand.” Both are members of the club. The report states that the club maintained four teams in the Wellington Cricket Association’s competitions last season, and about 60 members took part in the games. The senior team finished fourth in the championship, but was perhaps a little unfortunate in that several vital matches were lost by small margins in the absence of some of the leading players through representative engagements and through illness. However, the team was a young one with a leavening of experience, and should build up into a strong side in the near future. The second grade team did not perform as well as anticipated, owing chiefly to unexpected weakness in the batting. The bowling was good and the fielding excellent. It is probable that several of the members of this team will be playing in the seniors during the coming season. The junior Bl team put up the best performance of the club’s teams, finishing third in their grade. Their batting was consistently good, their bowling very useful. and their fielding good, and at times brilliant.

The junior C team, nftor a poor start, developed info n good side later in the season, and became one of the best in the grade. Representative honours were gained by the following: New Zealand, J. H. Lamason and B. Griffiths: Wellington, J. R. Lamason (captain). B. Griffiths and W. Rainbird: town representatives. C. Wnrehnm, J. R. Lamason and W. Rainbird ; junior, G. Whyte (captain), R. Boyes, R. Bush and K. Young.
