VALUELESS CHEQUES
Three Months’ Jail For Labourer Three months’ imprisonment on each charge, to be cumulative, was imposed by the Magistrate, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, yesterday, when a labourer and clerk, Alfred Hinton, alias Charles Green, alias John-Liston Hanton, aged 56, pleaded guilty to two charges of issuing valueles cheques. The charges were that on August 4, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., Wellington, a woman’s overcoat valued at £5/3/6, and £l/16/6 in cash, by representing that a cheque for £7 on the Bank of Australasia, Wairoa, payable to himself, was a good and valid order, and that on August 3 he similarly obtained from Rees-Jones Shoe Company, Ltd., two pairs of women’s shoes valued at £3/5 and £l/15/- in money by a cheque for £5 payable to himself, signed H. A. Martin, and drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Wairoa. On a further charge that on July 30 at Hamilton, he forged a cheque on the Bank of Australasia, Wairoa, signed H. A. Martin, he was remanded to appear at Hamilton on September 18. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell, for the police, said that in July last Hinton stayed at a lodging house in Auckland, and while there stole a number of cheques which he cashed at Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Wellington. In Wellington he went into the ReesJones shop and presented a valueless cheque for £5. On the following day he went to Kirkcaldie and Stains and there purchased an overcoat, presented a cheque for £7 and received the balance in cash. Afterward he left Wellington and said he gave the shoes away. On the Auckland charge he had been remanded to appear for sentence, and on the Palmerston North charge he was serving a sentence. “He is an habitual criminal,” the detective-ser-geant said.
