BRILLIANT GOLD ROD

Wins Chelmsford Stakes N.Z. HORSES IN ALL - THREE PLACES Maia’s Great Finishing Run UNPRECEDENTED HURDLE INCIDENT By Telegraph—Press Aaen,—Copyright(Received September 13, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, September 13. The defeat of Cuddle, who failed to get a place iu the Tramway Handicap, was a severe shock for a host of admirers at TuttersaU’s race at Randwick yesr terday. She was well placed along with The Marne until nearing the turn, where the latter left her standing, and she came home weakly in ninth place. The Marne and Panax fought out a thrilling finish. Gay Blonde distinguished herself by coming smartly from well back to finish strongly in fifth place. Sporting Blood and Silver Streak never threatened danger, and Ilium was a bad laat. ' The Marne carried 81b. over his Epsom weight and meets Panax on 131 b, better terms in the Epsom Handicap, The attendance was 26,500, which is 4000 above last year’s correrjponding meeting. New Zealand-bred horses Were well to the fore in the other events, notably, the Chelmsford Stakes, won by the brilliant Gold Rod, with Mala aud Gustos the other place-getters, Silver Ring a good fourth, and Rob Roy fifth. Maia's whirlwind finish was a mueh stronger topic of discussion than Gold Rod’s victory. The latter, galloping easily, turned into the straight with several lengths’ lead, and just when the public were' proclaiming his easy victory, Mala unwound a terrific run and got to within half a length of the winner. The consensus of opinion, however, is that Gold Rod was eased up. Custos showed mueh better form tbah in the Canterbury Gtflueas SylVaudale and Lough Neagh were never in the hunt. Brazilian won the first division of the Novice Handicap in stylish fashion, after playing up at the barrier. Cerne Abbas was always handy, finishing a good fourth, and is expected to improve. Ridden by A. Knox, who was recently injured, Irak won the second division of the Novice by three lengths and a half and beat Brazilian’s time by a second and a quarter, which is regarded as a particularly creditable effort. The Athenian finished sixth in Brazilian’s race, while Hands Up and Raepata were unplaced in Irak’s race.

Satmoth had a stirring duel with Wykeham in the Spring Handicap and triumphed by half a -head. Golden Treasure, although he seemed dangerous at one stage, was unable to sustain his run and finished a fair third only. Golden Chance, ridden a skilful race in a crowded field, won the Welter Handicap narrowly, but impressively. On Parade ran wide, but was always prominent, and should do better shortly. Riposte started, but was not prominent during the running. An unprecedented incident occurred in the Trial Hurdle, won by Musician, ridden by A. Dyer. Dyer had to be carried to the' scales in a semi-conscious condition. He received a severe knock on the nose at the first'jump and wab unable to remember anything afterward, yet he went on to win.

While unsaddling Dyei fainted, and ■was unable to walk to the scales. He was consequently carried to them by the stipendiary steward, Mr. L. Frazer, and the judge, Mr. Dudley Smith. The Rules of Racing permit this to be done, but actually this is the first time it had to be resorted to.

Dyer states that the horse jumped very high, causing his foot to leave the stirrup, his face striking the horse’s neck. He suffered great pain, but improved after the third hurdle. Dyer, who is an apprentice, has no recollection of how he stayed on the horse. Jockey D. Munro, who won on The Marne in the Tramway Handicap, was suspended for a month for careiess riding. It was reported that he crossed too quickly, interfering with Gay Blonde and Cuddle. McCarten stated after the Chelmsford Stakes that Gold Rod had nothing to fear from Mala, and expects the former to acquit himself brilliantly in the Derby. George Price says that Cuddle will not race again until the Randwick spring meeting. E. J. Ellis, the trainer, states that Kmnoull is suffering from muscle soreness, which is more acute since arrival in Sydney. Results: — THE TRAMWAY HANDICAP, «t £5OO. Seven furlongs. A. B. Abel's ch. h. ALEXANDER The death occurred at Napier yesterday of R. Alexander, well known trainer of Greenmeadows and formerly at Riccarton. Alexander, who was only a young man, also trained for Mr. J. J. Corry when Rabbi was racing. Later he had charge of Mr. T. H. Lowry’s team. His death was not unexpected as he had recently undergone a serious operation and little hope was entertained for his recovery. It is a shock all the same to a wide circle of friends. He leaves a wife and young family. FOXTON HANDICAPS Handicaps for the Foxton Racing Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday next, have been declared by Mr. W. P. Russell as follows:—
