WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Friendly Club Games EXCELSIOR BEAT KARORI There were three friendly women’s hockey club matches played on Saturday between Exceleior (Masterton) and Karori, St. Joseph's seniors and St. Joseph’s thirds, and Varsity and Victoria House. The match between Technical Old Girls and Carterton was not played. Victory went to Excelsior, St. Joseph's seniors and Varsity. On Saturday week, September 26, Paraparaumu will meet St. Joseph’s seniors at Paraparaumu. Excelsior Beat Karori. Playing a return match at Karori Park Excelsior (Masterton) once again proved, superior to Karori, repeating the good display shown against the city combination a few weeks back at Lansdowne (Masterton), when the Masterton eleven won by 4 goals to nil. On this occasion the team went one better and succeeded by 5 goals to nil. Considering the difference in the grades (Excelsior is a senior team aud Karori junior), Karon played exceptionally well under the circumstances and were far from disgraced, Excelsior goal-getters were Mieses Jean Harding (2), N. Page (2) and N. Rutherford. The umpires Were Messrs. W. Harding (Masterton) and C. Lloyd (Wellington). Varsity Beat Victoria House. The match between Varsity and Victoria House, played at Kilbirnie, had its moments of thrills, but on the whole the hockey displayed could have been of a much higher standard. It was obvious Varsity was the more polished team, but the keen tackling of Victoria House kept the opposition vanguard at bay. Miss I. Price scored for Varsity in the opening session and shortly before the interval Miss Sanders equalised. Miss G. Kean gave Varsity a goal advantage in the second session which was maintained to the end, Varsity winning by 2 goals to 1. Keen Friendly Game. A keen friendly match was played at Kilbirnie between St. Josph’s senior B team and the same club’s third grade eleven. Play was fast and even, the thirds holding their own in surprising style against the more experienced opposition. In fact so well did the team play as a whole that it took the seniors 25 minutes of the first spell to score aud practically the same time of the second half to secure their second goal, the game going to the senior teap by 2 goals to nil, Miss Mary Baillie, who has been playing up to expectations during the past month, scored both goals. Mr, S. P. Todd was the umpire. Technical v. Carterton. The annual match between Technical College Old Girls and a team from Carterton, scheduled to be played at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon, did not eventuate, but in all probability will be played later in the month. The exstudents' annual field day proved a great success.
