UNNECESSARY TRIP
Naval Draft Returns To Auckland
Dominion Special Service Auckland, August 14,
After an unnecessary but none the less enjoyable trip as far as Ceylon, 14 petty-offleers and ratings belonging to H.M.S. Philomel returned to Auckland by the Wanganella to-day. When they left Auckland at short notice some time ago, the draft was under orders to go to Gibraltar and there join the Achilles, which, on her way from England to replace the Diomede, was detained owing to the tenseness of the European situation arising from the Italian invasion of Abyssinia and the League of Nations’s application of sanctions. The crew of the Diomede had transferred to the Achilles when the New Zealand cruiser arrived in England, but a draft of 14 men from the Philomel was required if her complement was to be brought up to fighting strength. When, however, the draft reached Colombo, word was received that the lifting of sanctions against Italy had eased the international situation and that the Achilles would probably return from Gibraltar to England for another overhaul before coming to New Zealand. The extra men were not therefore required and were told to return again via Australia by the next available ship.
