QUEEN MARY’S GARDENS
The gardens at Marlborough House are undergoing many changes. The old, forma), Victorian style is disappearing, and under, the supervision of Queen Mary a more natural plan is being carried out.
This will mean in the future fine herbaceous borders and masses of what may be termed old-fashioned “cottage garden” flowers. Roses ■will be well represented here. These have always been a favourite flower with Queen Mary. Next year the gardens should take a prominent place among the private gardens of London. The spacious lawns are to be retained.
The concert by pupils of St. Mark’s Church School in aid of the assembly hall fund, which was so enthusiastically received at the first performance ou Wednesday night, will be repeated on Monday night, the proceeds to go toward the same fund.
The very newest silhouette with its pencil skirt and its short flaring coat is having a tremendous vogue in London. At Agnes Samson’s an ensemble lin. striped in navy, grey, cherry and saxe shows this interesting new line. The skirt is cut on tile cross to ensure a snug fit, and the top, vertically striped, is finished with a collar am) belt of plain navy. The jaunty little navy coat, collared with stripes, has a definitely wide back which should stand out. To balance this the hat of navy felt with a narrow grey grosgrain ribbon has a forward flaring brim which should be worn well over one eye. Very smart! A delightfully colourful tweed, grey with line checks of black and apple green flecked with sulphur and bright navy, makes a stunning suit—skirt plain, the collarless coat, with wide, soft lapels. Among the hats: A navy tarn shows the new square-cut line across the front. Another navy felt hat has a forward brim and is trimmed with a grey and rust reversible satin ribbon tied in a bow at the back. A fawn bowler with tightly curled sides is bound and banded with brown grosgrain.—Agnes Samson, Lambton Quay, —Advt.
