NEW CITY SHORT-CUT
Wellington Terrace and
Clifton Terrace
REMOVING OLD GRIEVANCE At one time the public were allowed to cross the Kelburne-Karori Company’s tramline by an approach from Tramway Avenue (off Wellington Terrace) and so on, by a pathway, to Clifton Terrace. Experience proved that however convenient it ■was for people to have a short cut from Wei lington Terrace to Clifton Terrace over private property, it might not be to the advantage of the company should an accident occur. Acting on ad vice the company decided to close the right-of-way, and did so, though there were protests against its action. That was some years ago. People in the locality have never quite got over the loss of the privilege of being able to reach Clifton Terrace in two minutes, instead of having to walk all the way round by way of Everton Terrace, and have urged the city council from time to time to restore their former privilege. The agitation has been going on for six or seven years. At length the city council has moved in the matter, but it could not do so without special legislation, authorising it to take a certain strip of land from the Kelburne-Karori Tramway Company on the south side of the tramway tracks for the purposes of a right-of-way. This business has proceeded so far that plan and transfer deed have been prepared and submitted to the company for approval and signature, the documents having been approved by the Lands and Survey Department. As soon as the necessary formalities have been complied with the work of forming the through right-of-way will be proceeded with. The new right-of-way, only six feet in width, will continue In a direct line from the bottom of Tramway Avenue (15 feet in breadth) up to the level of Clifton Terrace on the southern side of the line, so that there will be no necessity to cross the tracks. For a distance of about 25 feet the new right-of-way will consist of steps. The rest will be a graded pathway. The total distance between Wellington Terrace and Clifton Terrace by the proposed right-of-way will be about 90 yards.
