OBITUARY

Dr. J. S. Purdy Sydney, July 27. The death occurred suddenly In a private hospital of Dr. John Smith Purdy, one of the most prominent figures in public life at Sydney over a long period. He was due to retire next January, from the position of city health officer. Born at Morpeth, Northumberland, iu 1872, Dr. Purdy graduated M. 8., C.M., at Aberdeen University in 1898. Tn 1901 and 1902 he was on active service in South Africa aw surgeon-captain. He received ‘he degree of M.D. at. Aberdeen University in 1904, and was president of tlie public health section of the Australasian Medical Congress in 1911. Dr. Purdy enlisted with the First Australian Division in 1914 with the rank of major. After service in Egypt and at Gallipoli, he commanded tlie Australian Army Medical Corps training depot at Parkhouse, Salisbury Plains, with the rank of colonel, and was officer commanding the Tenth Australian Field Ambulance in France for 14 months. zVfter the battle of Mewsines lie was awarded the D.S.O.

Sir Albert John Gould was born at Sydney in 18-17 and was educated at Sydney. Ho was admitted as a solicitor in 1870. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative zXssembly from 1883 to 1898. ami Minister of Justice from 1889 to 1891 ami from 1894 to 1898. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1899 to 1901, a senator for New South Wales from 1901 to 1917, and president of the Senate from 1907 to 1910 He was knighted in 1908. From 1864 to 1905 he was a member of the Australian defence forces and retired with the rank of lieu-tenant-colonel. 11c was a well-known worker for charity and was also for many years it member of Ihe General Synod ol Australia, tlie Provincial Synod of New South ’Wall's ami Diocesan Synod of Sydney, besides being chancellor of the archdiocese of Sydney.
