SMASH ON CROSSING Evidence of Frantic Efforts To Stop By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, July 27. Leonard Olliver, a Post and Telegraph Department radio inspector, was killed when his car was struck by a train this afternoon on the level crossing in Langdon’s Road. Olliver was alone in the car, which was travelling east over the line toward the North Road. The car was struck by a goods train from Ranglora and was hurled across the rails. The driver’s head was knocked against one ol the car windows, causing grievous injuries. Death is believed to have been instantaneous. Mr. Olliver was married and was between 40 and 50 years of age. . The view of an approaching train is partly obscured at this spot»by a clump of trees. The front wheels of Mr. Ulliver’s car were over the line and the engine struck the body of the car. Skid marks on the road showed that the driver had made frantic efforts to stop the car. having too late seen the approaching train. In the crash the car was turned completely round and hurled against a heavy wood barrier at the cattle stops, smashing one post at the ground level.
