HARRIER RUNS

Saturday’s Activities METHODIST CLUB Kaiwarra provided a more countrified atmosphere than usual for the 25 members of the Methodist club who assembled there on Saturday. F. Thorley and F. Kerslake laid a 5-mile trail, which proceeded from the church, up the gorge road to Trellisick Crescent, and thence across the valley to the farm road beyond. The fairly level running here was a good chance for opening out. Passing through Ngaio, the trail continued to Khandallah, past St. Barnabas Home, and returned via the Bridle Track. The runners were sent out in three packs under Walker. Mercer and Purvis respectively. The last-named led the slow pack home, after being out 60 minutes. A few minutes later Walker and Ingram sprinted up the straight vigorously. Miss Betty Flaws, a keen supporter, was in charge of the welcome afternoon tea. The club championship will be run from .Miramar next .Saturday. Olympic Club Olympic club members were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. I’. L. Wilson at their home at Karori on Saturday afternoon for an invitation run. There was a fair attendance of members, over 25 turning out. An excellent trail of some seven miles was laid by K. MacDowall and K. Gillies. Leading up to the top of the hills on the south side of Karori, the paper led along the boundary fence of the reservoir for some distance, and th® ll dropped down into Long Gully. Ihis was followed down with numerous cross; ings of the creek until the South Karori Road was reached. The road was. then followed in home again past the Karori hockey grounds. The trail was a good one to follow, being well varied with hills, mud, creek, and finally road, to finish up with. The fast pack judged the distance well, closing up with the slow pack toward the finish. The run-in up Beauchamp Street, of about 400 yards, resulted in a win for S. Reid, with G. Campbell in second place and W. McNaught third. _ , . Six colts went out for their run with R. Bezar in charge. Their run-in resulted in a win for .Shaw, with Goetzlot second and J. Bezar third. This last colt is now in his fourth season tor the club and has so far not missed a run: a very fine effort on his part. Incidentally, there are seven members in the club who are going for their attendance medals, one of whom is now well on his way for the gold medal for three .years consecutive attendance without a miss. Afternoon tea provided a most welcome finish to the run, club captain L. Meyers suitably thanking the hosts for their hospitality.

Brooklyn Club A run, which has become an annual event, was held by the Brooklyn club to Pencarrow lighthouse on Saturday-. Starting from Rona Bay, the trail led to the end of the road to the hill-tops, over the hills to Pencarrow, and back along the beach. .Twenty-six runners were present, 20 going to the lighthouse, the remainder into Gollin’s Valley. The trail was found in excellent condition the whole vpiy. and, combined with the fine day, good times were recorded by the majority of the members. Hutt Valley Club Spirited finishes were witnessed by a large attendance of interested spectators who assembled at Hutt Park on Saturday afternoon, the occasion being the Hutt Valley harriers’ field day. The events were half-mile, one mile and two mile handicap races. Ideal weather favoured the runners, but a soft track prevented any fast times being recorded. Twenty-three competitors lined up for each event. Mr. H. Sanders proved a most efficient starter, and great credit reflects on the handicapper, Mr. H. 'A. Walker, whose work in handicapping such a large field proved very accurate. A great performance was registered by T. Pearce, who scored four points, winning the halfmile, one mile, and being second in the two-mile event. Second place was secured by G. Turner, who scored 10 points, and M. Patterson, third, with 11 points. Next week’s run will be the club championships at Hutt Park at 2.30. C.Y.M. Club

The O.Y.M. club championship was held from the residence of Mr. G. Scott, Puriri Street, on Saturday. The course was six miles and a quarter, and led from Puriri Street down to White's Line, along to the Waiwetu Stream, to Rossiter Avenue; thence down Burnside Road, over the hill to Nai Nai Laue; through the Nai Nai reserve, down King’s Crescent, Epuni Street, Wipako Street, and into Cambridge Terrace, finishing along Puriri Street. The track was very slippery in places, and made the going very heavy. G. Heppleston ran a very good race to win from S. Odell. Results: G. Heppleston, time 41.30, 1; S. Odell, 42.20, 2; S. Heppleston, 3; K. Brooker. 4. G. Heppleston also came first in the sealed handicap, but as he was not able to accept both prizes, the sealed handicap event went to S. Odell. The handicap resulted: S. Odell (scr.), 1; S. Heppleston, handicap 1.30, 2; J. Werry, 2.uu, 3. Wellington Club Thirty-five members of the Wellington club spent a very enjoyable afternoon on Saturday, when an invitation run was held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. Resnick, 18 Matai Rond, Hataitai. Both in the run and the afternoon tea which followed, members showed great enthusiasm. The course followed was six miles in length, and consisted solely of road. Commencing from Matai Road, the trail continued along the top of. the hill to Wellington Road. Here it branched off up to Mount Victoria, and over the hill under the 2YA masts. The packs then followed down the track to Palliser Road, through Grafton and Maida Vale Roads, and on to the Bav Road as far as the Patent Slip. The run in, which followed, led up Belvedere Road, and back to Matai Road. The results of the run-in were: 11. Brady 1, F. Timms 2, J. Drawbridge 3. The club captain thanked Mr. Re.uiick for his interest in the club, and expressed appreciation for the invitation. Replying. Mr. Resnick expressed bis pleasure at the opportunity of seeing the club members once again. The B grade championships will be held by invitation from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Murray, 128 The Parade, Lyall Bay, on Saturday next, at 2.45 p.m. The course will be one lap of the 1 osselcr. University Club’s Run The Varsity Harrier Club held their weekly run from the Onslow Football Club gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The packs took n short trail of about five miles at a good sharp pace, proceeding to Johnsonville over the new road and returning via the old. Over the distance Cairns and Horsley were both showing a return of form. Gretton and King, both previously handicapped by ankle injuries, showed they will probably improve over the few weeks of training left before the major events of the season. Stewart and Miller are stout runners who keep an even pace throughout the run. The two packs merged about half a mile from home, and a scratch runin over about 150 yards resulted in a win for McElroy, with Rockel and Clare close behind. After the run the club was entertained by Mr. and Mrs. IL 11. Cornish, Khandallah, at afternoon tea, the vice-captain, A. Horsley, tendering the thanks of the club to the host and hostess.
