Interim Report by League
Committee EVILS OF MALNUTRITION London, July 23. The League of Nations committee appointed to investigate Mr. S. M. Bruce’s nutrition scheme, in an interim report, emphasises the widespread incidence of malnutrition, and adds that in no country does the whole population attain a standard desirable In tho interests of health. Malnutrition, the report states, is a widespread cause of maternal and infant mortality, and one of the main causes of the high proportion of rejected military recruits. In many countries the average diet iu the lower income groups is inadequate for good health. The report recommends a diet including meat, fish, milk, eggs, cheese, butter, fresh green vegetables, fruit and potatoes, and stresses the outstanding value of milk. It urges the use of less highly-milled cereals, advises a lower consumption of sugar, aud recommends the education of doctors, nurses and the public in the principles of nutrition, the provision of adequate supplies of food to mothers, infants, children, and adolescents, provision to meet the nutrition needs of the lower-income sections of the population, and reduction of the prices of protective foods in order to bring bhem within the reach of all classes of the com in u nity.
