CARNATIONS

Root Cuttings Now Almost any tufty bit of carnation growth will root during July if it is cut clean on base and is lightly trimmed on the top before being bedded in a coarse, moist sand somewhere under the shade of a lightheaded shrub or tree. If such a place cannot be found, arrange to hold the cuttings under preserving jars or a bell glass. Keeping out the cold air will hasten the rooting. Overcrowding the miniature glasshouses will not do any harm. Quite a lot of.stubby green bits can be accommodated under one bell glass. An old tumbler or a widemouthed bottle will take one piece, aud shelter it quite nicely. Where there are no bottles keep the cuttings in half shade. They will do well there.
