“CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT OPIUM”
e-_. — Chinese Offender’s Plea “Got to have opium; can’t live without it.” This was the excuse offered by Wong .Mow, gardener, aged 34, when he was charged jn the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday with being found in possession of prepared opium, He was fined £4O. in default two months’ imprisonment by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M, On a further charge of permitting premises fit Auckland to be . used for the purposes of smoking opium he was remanded to appear at Auckland on July 30.. z “Got it for chew, that all,” said Mow when the charge was read to him. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell said Mow was arrested on Wednesday by Detectives W. Ritchie and T. Brosnan on warrant, and when his possessions wpre searched a quantity of “seconds” and prepared opium was found. Mow was fined in 4033 and again Jn 1034 for being in possession of prepared opium, last year he was fiped for occupying premises used for opium-smok-ing, and now he was wanted at Auckland for a similar offence.
The magistrate (to defendant): Where' did you learn to tjse opium—in New Zealand?
Defendant: Yes; in New Zealand. How old are you now? —“Thirtyfour.” You must have learned at a young ago?—/‘Yes; 22.”
