DOMINIONS BUTTER

Question as to Dropping of Duty Proposal (Received July 22, 7.45 p.m.) London, July 21. It is understood that behind Major R. H. Dorman-Smith’s question in the House of Commons whether there is an understanding that there shall not be a duty on Dominion dairy produce is a search for the reason for the abandonment of a proposal which the Minister of Agriculture communicate. to the Dominion Premiers in June, 1935, that it was intended to Impose a duty of 15/- a hundredweight on Dominion butter and 30/- a hundredweight on foreign. The Minister, Mr. Walter Elliot, and the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Runciman, were uninformative, but it is generally assumed that thf abandonment of the proposal is not unconnected with the recent discussions with Ministers by the Australian Minister of Commerce, Dr. Earle Page. Conservative members of the House of Commons Agricultural Committee urge the Government to impose a preferential levy on meat from the Do minions in order to reduce the beef subsidy.

It was reported in a cable published yesterday that in the House of Commons the Minister of Agriculture informed Major Dorman-Smith that no decision had been taken whether or not there shall be a tax on dairy products from the Dominions, nor was there any understanding on the matter
