DISAPPOINTMENT FOR DEBUTANTES
Rain Interrupts Royal Reception PRESENTATIONS NOT COMPLETED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received July 22, 7.45 p.m.) London, July 22. The King held an afternoon reeep tion which was attended by 500 debutantes, in Buckingham Palace grounds Rain caused disappointment to many debutantes, half of whom had curtseyed to the King, seated in the crimson and gold chair of State under the Indian durbar tent, when rain fell heavily. The King left his chair, looked at the sky and conferred with the Lord Chamberlain, who announced that His Majesty had ordered the abandonment of the reception. The queue of debutantes joined the general rush for shelter. They still hoped for an opportunity of presentation until the King and Mr. Baldwin came out, look ed at the heavy clouds and consulted, after which the King and members of the Royal Family went to the Palace, but before the guests had entirely dispersed the sun was shining. The Lord Chamberlain announced that women unable to pass the King will be considered officially presented. The full Court mourning ended yes terday, and this was the first social function held by the King at Bucking ham Palace since the death of King George. The reception will rank as a Court for those women presented. Altogether 1200 people were invited to the recep tion. and large crowds gathered out side Buckingham Palace to witness the arrival of the King’s guests.
