Weddel and Co., Ltd., London, reported that business in the River Plate had been rather slow, with sellers holding for last prices and buyers refusing to go on. North America was not in the market, and only very little interest was shown by European buyers at prices which were not acceptable. About the middle of June the market was, for the first time, broken by sales of ox hides at 68} cents against the last price of 70 cents; but even then the market continued to be steady with most of the frigorificos refusing to follow suit, and business practically came to a standstill. Meanwhile, stocks were accumulating. and no support whatsoever was given to the market from either Europe or North America. This eventually resulted in further sales of ox hides at 68$ cents, equal to 5 3-Bd. c.i.f. S/W. It now remained to be seen whether the market would steady off on this basis or whether ■ a further decline would have to be recorded. Taking the recent political developments into account, it is difficult to forecast the future of the hide market. The situation in Erance is still unsettled, and the Government is having difficulties in mastering the various problems, and the uncertainty wjth regard to eventual currency restrictions have an adverse effect on business. On the other hand, the decision of the British Cabinet to drop the sanctions policy is expected to have a stimulating effect on the market. Nominal quotations of leading Argentine frigorifieo descriptions are to-day as follows: —B.A. heavy ox, 5 3-8(1. to s}d.; B.A, light ox. fid. to 5 1-Bd.: B.A. extremes, 5 3-Bd. to s}d.: B.A. light cows, fid. to 5 1-Sd.: B.A. defect, ox. fid. to 5 1-Bd.; B.A. defect, cows. 4}d. to 4 3-Bd. ’ • Afisecllaneoiis and colonial hide business has been comparatively slow, with slightly higher prices being asked by New Zealand and Australian shippers.
