FIJI HOCKEY TEAM
Outclassed by Eastern Southland By Telegraph—Press Association. Gore, July 22. A crowd of 3000 witnessed Eastern Southland, the leading Dominion women's hockey team, completely outclass the Fiji team by 7 goals to nil. Eastern's combination in the forward line was a feature, while the defence of the backs was sound. Fiji were given every chance to score in the second spell, but were unable to finish off their movements. Mrs. Fenn, the full-back, was outstanding in defence for Fiji. The weather conditions were the best so far experienced by the visitors. Miss M. Nicol opened the score for Eastern from a melee. Mrs. Fenn (full-back) and MissL. Storck (goalkeeper) were applauded for brilliant saves and strong clearances. The Eastern forwards swung into action, and Miss H. Reid finished off the movement. Shortly after Mias Reid made a brilliant run from halfway and beat the opposition to score. Misses E. Raffles and M. Errey were prominent for. jEiji, but the visitors could not finish off. Miss K. Bond secured at halfway and raced clean through to score. Fiji entered Eastern territory for the first time, but Miss Raffles’s shot was stopped. Miss Reid then staged a spectacular run to net her third goal. , Fiji had many cliahees to score in the second spell, but the shooting . ;i wa6 inaccurate. Eastern did not force the game, and play deterioratedljl^Eiji:lacked finish, while their stickwork iVas far below the Eastern standard. Misw Harman made a spectacular sideline run. centring to Mw Sutherland, whose shot rose over the net. Eastern then increased their score, Miss Reid making an opening for Miss Bond. Miss Mcßain, the Eastern halfback, collected halfway, carried through a nice solo effort, and scored.
