Changes in Prospect
London, July 20.
In the House of Commons, the Colonial Secretary, Mr. W. OrmsbyGore. informed Mr. Tom Williams (Lab.: Don Valley) that as a result of representations regarding changes iu the Constitution of Fiji it had been decided to recommend to the King that there should be a reconstituted Legislative Council consisting of the Governor, 16 official members, five European members (three to be elected by communal franchise and two to be nominated), five Fijian members, to be selected as at present, and five Indian members (three to be elected by communal franchise and two to be nominated). While details are being worked out the term of the present Council has been prolonged until December 3, or such date, not beyond July 14, 1937, as may be. proclaimed.
At. present the Legislative Council con. sista of the Governor and not more than 13 nominated members, six European elected members, three native members, and three Indian elected members. The Governor, appointed by the Crown, is assisted by an Executive Council consisting of seven members. Native administration is carried on through the chiefs under the Governor’s supervision.
