. Vice-Regal. The Governor-General and Lady Galway yesterday received the party of American club women at present in Wellington. To-morrow at 10.30 a.m. his Excellency will preside at a meeting of the Executive Council, and at 11.30 a.m. he will receive Archdeacon St. Barbe Holland, Bishop-designate of Wellington.,
Sir R. Heaton Rhodes arrived at Wellington from the south yetserday. Sir Thomas Wilford returned to Wellington yesterday morning from a brief visit to Auckland. Mr. S. EicheTbaum left Wellington for the north last night. Mr. 0. E. Robertson left Wellington for the north last night. Mr. G. G. Stewart, publicity manager of the Railways Department, travelled south last night from Wellington. Mr. S. 0. E. Bates has returned to Wellington from a visit to Christchurch. Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, Australian Trade Commissioner, was a passenger from Wellington last night for Christchurch. Mr. L. A. Jacobsen, managing director of the Excelsior Supply Company, Ltd., Wellington, returned by the Marama yesterday from Australia. Major Miles, of the Salvation Army, has been appointed as divisional corps cadet guardian for the Wellington division, and Captain Gower as assistant divisional corps cadet guardian. Mr. N. H. Smith, of the Shell Oil Company of New Zealand, Ltd., returned to Wellington by the Marama yesterday after a trip to Australia. He was accompanied by Mrs. Smith.
Mr. A. D. M. Longden, who was manager of the John Brownlee concert toiir, is at present ii> Wellington. He is directing the tour of La Meri, the famous dancer. Mr. W. G. Riddell, a retired stipendiary magistrate of New Zealand, returned to Wellington by the Marama yesterday after a two months’ holiday in Australia.
Mr. D. H. McLean, a prominent Southland sheep-farmer, returned to New Zealand by the Marama yesterday after a brief visit to Australia. He is accompanied by Mrs. McLean. Mr. L. Buiskool, who is connected with the transport business in Batavia, arrived at Wellington from Australia by the Marama yesterday on a holiday tour. Accompanied by his wife, he left for the north yetserday morning to connect with the Monterey at Auckland.
Captain W. S. King, of Christchurch, has been appointed director and conductor of Derry’s Military Band. He was formerly conductor of the Christchurch Musical Society, and is a life member of the New Zealand Bands Association.
Mr. D. J. McGowan was granted leave of absence, because of ill-health, by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at a meeting last night. Sincere regret was expressed at 51 r. McGowan’s indisposition, and members voiced the hope that he would make a speedy recovery.
