WELLINGTON CHESS LEAGUE
Fourth Round Results The competitions, controlled by the Wellington Chess League were recently advanced a further stage by the completion of the third round in the first grade and the fourth round in the two lower grades. Two matches were played in the first grade competition. The Wellington A team secured a comfortable win from Ngaio, C. L. Maloney’s excellent win being a feature of the match. In the other fixture the Wellington B team were again fortunate in catching their opponents with a depleted side and a good performance by A. E. Jessup, who beat J. L. Hardy, enabled them to score a further point. The two Wellington clubs now occupy the first two places in the table. The remaining clubs have a game in hand, however, and the position is still open. In the second grade the matches were all of an even nature, the successful clubs being W.M.C., Karori and. Shell, who secured victories from Wellington, Ngaio and Hutt respectively. As Miramar won by default from Wadestown they now head the table on games average. The next three clubs equal them on points, and there is every indication of a close finish in this competition, especially now that Hutt have lost a point The Technical Old Students’ first win was a noteworthy feature of play in the third grade fixtures. This they obtained from Brooklyn, one of the higher placed sides, and their success will, it is hoped, spur them on to further honours. In the remaining matches W.M.C. soundly beat Wellington, Karori comfortably won from Technical, and Shell A beat their B team by a narrow margin. These results enable Karori to retain their place at the head of the table, but Brooklyn drop down to fourth place. Here again it is impossible at this stage to forecast with, any degree of accuracy the ultimate destination of honours. The full scores for the third round of the first grade and the fourth round of the second and third grades are as follows :—
